ISSEY PROVIDES SUN PROTECTION FOR LARGE SCALE SKYLIGHT IN PERTH SHOPPING CENTRE

A Perth shopping centre was experiencing extreme heat and glare through a large scale skylight above its food court. Issey was called on to provide an effective, customised sun solution.

The Client
The Westcentre complex in West Perth, managed by Churchill Knight Real Estate, was experiencing heat and glare problems above the shopping centre’s food court. The sun was beating down on the large barrel vaulted dome skylight in the centre’s ceiling, causing the food area in the arcade below to be uncomfortably hot and bright. Both staff and patrons of the centre were uncomfortable working, shopping, or dining under the skylight’s extreme warmth and light.

The Challenge
Issey was hired to find a method of shading the large scale skylight without completely shutting out the natural light that the skylight provided for the centre.

Issey chose their FTS (Fabric Tension System) for the large barrel vaulted dome skylight. The window would require eight FTS shades measuring 8m x 4m to cover the span of the skylight.

The FTS savvy, dual-motor, retractable awning stops the sun before it hits the glass to warm up the interior of the centre. Its taut, see-through fabric allows for the infiltration of beautiful natural light without glare, heat and harmful UV radiation. The fabric also allows for visibility through the dome, maintaining the arcade’s open feeling.

The FTS’ two motors keep the fabric extra tight for optimal sun protection, specifically around uniquely shaped skylights.

The Job
The FTS shades were fitted closely to the skylight glass to ensure maximum protection even when the sun is at a low angle. A minimal gap was maintained to allow evacuation of hot air trapped between the glass and fabric; as a result, the systems work very efficiently in reducing the temperature of the interior.

The systems also resist high winds and are fully retractable, allowing for complete retraction into the sleek, discreet headboxes. The headbox acts as a shield for the system, prolonging the life of the awning.

Fitted with sun and wind sensors, the awnings operate intelligently on their own, extending when the sun gets too intense, and retracting when the wind is too strong, or the sun has relented, requiring less shade for the window.

Because Issey are the FTS awning experts, the systems were installed flawlessly onto the centre’s large scale skylight. The installation required Issey’s experience and know-how to adapt the awning to the centre’s specific application.

Project Wrap Up
Issey met the needs of the centre and delivered a solution to solve the heat and glare issue troubling the centre’s staff and customers.

With Issey expertise, the FTS awnings were professionally installed for the centre’s specific shading needs.

Customers can comfortably dine in the food court, and the food court staff can work without the sun’s extreme heat and glare shining through.

Issey provided the West Centre with optimal sun protection whilst allowing for natural light to filter through to softly illuminate the eateries.
