ISSEY PROVIDES FUNCTIONAL SUN CONTROL WITH TRENDY SOPHISTICATION

During the building of a commercial project on Darling Harbour, the construction company needed a solution for sun, glare and wind. Issey created a stylish, effective answer for the trendy new strip.

The Client
The diversified Multiplex Group offers operations in construction, development, funds management and facilities and infrastructure management. They have been involved with many major projects such as Telstra Stadium and BankWest Tower in Perth.

The Challenge
After buying Darling Harbour’s King Street Wharf in Sydney, the development team knew that they would need effective sun shading to block the harsh afternoon sun reflecting off of the water.

Originally another type of blind had been specified. Issey looked at the situation and believed they provide a product better suited to the situation.

The wharf development team hired Issey to solve the sun problem facing the western side of the strip where they planned a busy strip of cafes, restaurants and bars. The west facing ground and first floor shops which would experience harsh heat and glare from the sun in the afternoon.

This area needed external blinds to effectively block heat and glare, whilst being robust enough to withstand the strong harbour breezes experienced by the shopfronts. In addition to function, the shades needed to look stylish in the chic surroundings of Sydney’s famous Darling Harbour.

Proposed Solution
Issey decided to apply the Vertiroll tensioned screen to effectively block sun, uncomfortable glare, and harmful UV rays. The Vertiroll is also robust and able to act as a wind-break for breezier areas, such as waterfronts. It has permanent tracks and a weighted bottom bar to help hold the system in place.

When fitted with the Soltis 86 see-through fabric, patrons are still able to enjoy the harbour views whilst being protected from the sun’s heat and glare, as well as harbour breezes.

The fabric on each screen is either orange or white for a vibrant, eye-catching style. The powdercoating on each system was matched to the modern metal architecture which makes King Street Wharf memorable.

Twenty-four Issey Vertirolls were used on the wharf strip, each measuring 3.4m x 3m. The screens are remote control operated and outfitted with wind sensors.

The Job
The remote control operation allows shop owners to individually extend or retract the motorised sun shade according to their needs. At the end of the day, café and bar owners can simply push a button and the screen disappears into its streamline headbox, making closing time a cinch.

The unobtrusive headbox protects the screen when the system is not in use, prolonging the life of the system and keeping the fabric looking new and vibrant.

The shades’ wind sensors act as a safety function, automatically retracting the system when the wind conditions are too strong, giving shop owners piece of mind that the system is guarded.

Project Wrap-Up
With Issey’s sun shading solutions, the King Street Wharf strip achieved effective sun control with a stylish flair.

The bright fabric colour is an eye-catching landmark amongst the already striking modern architecture, adding to the trendy sophistication of Darling Harbour.

Issey provided a functional solution to the strip’s sun problem whilst offering the customised style the shopfronts needed.

After over five years of use the sunshades have not required any repairs or maintenance.
