ISSEY’S TRENDY SOLUTION FOR A LIVELY STREET IN MELBOURNE
An award-winning architect was hired by a popular restaurant in the heart of Melbourne which needed a stylish sun and space solution for its outdoor dining area. The architect called on Issey to provide a creative, effective resolution to the problem.
The Client
Jackson Clements Burrows, a Melbourne based architectural firm, focuses strongly on design motivated by a desire to create sensitive and stimulating environments which achieve unique and successful solutions for clients.
With this methodology in mind, the firm enlisted Issey to help them create such a design for Punch Lane Wine Bar, a well-established, popular restaurant along a busy street in Melbourne.
The Challenge
The restaurant owners were searching for a unique, dynamic, flexible way to enclose their outdoor dining area which is situated on a narrow footpath, with heavy flowing traffic. The owners wanted to protect customers dining outdoors from the harsh sun and cold winds experienced by the shopfront.
In addition to being functional, the owners wanted the restaurant shading to be stylish and vibrant. With purpose and fashion in mind, the architects from Jackson Clements Burrows decided to solicit Issey Sun Shading Systems into their award-winning design to create such an environment.
Proposed Solution
Three Issey Laguna folding arm awnings were installed, two measuring 2.95m x 1.5m, and one measuring 2.25m x 1.5m, to provide retractable, effective overhead cover.
Two Issey Vertiroll tensioned screens were utilised, both measuring 2.95m x 2.4m, to create a vertical wind break and a barrier between the street and the wine bar’s dining experience.
Both Issey models were fitted with a Soltis see-through fabric so that the bar clientele could enjoy the activity of the street whilst feeling shielded and separated, enabling relaxation and enjoyment of their meals. For added interest the fabric was printed on to create a stunning, eye-catching effect.
The Job
The Issey products effectively block the sun’s uncomfortable glare and harmful UV rays, as well as offer protection from the strong breezes that make eating outdoors frustrating.
The Laguna and Vertiroll provide optimal sun protection as well as advertising for the restaurant. The striking, unique design of the blinds outfitted with the vibrant colour acts as a landmark on the street, making the restaurant a place patrons will remember.
The retractability of the systems also makes closing time a breeze. Instead of lugging obtrusive, protection barriers and umbrellas inside at night, the Laguna and Vertiroll retract into slimline headboxes at the touch of a button.
The headbox protects the shade from weathering and prolongs the life of the system. Once retracted, the blinds are also protected from vandals ensuring the systems remain untarnished and maintain its fresh look.
Project Wrap-Up
With Issey’s sun shading solutions, the Punch Lane Wine Bar achieved an outdoor seating area, with protection from sun, wind, traffic and a busy, narrow footpath.
The awnings and blinds act as a piece of robust street furniture, adding character and modern design to an already vivacious part of the city.
Issey met its client’s challenge and requests by providing a sophisticated sun solution for the bar’s unique needs.
